Building On

In the junior years at St Mary’s, learning is exciting, hands-on and full of discovery. Our classrooms are vibrant spaces where students explore their creativity, build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, and develop a genuine love of school.

Students continue to strengthen their reading fluency, write for a range of purposes and grow in confidence with number concepts and basic operations. Through engaging and purposeful activities, they are supported every step of the way as they develop the essential skills that set them up for future success.

Inquiry learning sparks curiosity as students ask questions, make observations and begin to understand how the world around them works. Social and Emotional Learning is woven throughout daily life, helping children build friendships, manage emotions and develop empathy and cooperation within a safe, nurturing environment.

Wellbeing

We provide additional support in our junior rooms through bilingual aides and education support staff who work closely with classroom teachers to ensure every child feels confident and capable. Our Wellbeing Team has a strong presence in the junior area, with staff regularly in classrooms supporting children to build emotional awareness and resilience. Mac, our much-loved wellbeing dog, is also a familiar and calming presence, often helping students feel settled and ready to learn.

Each morning begins with a “Soft Start,” providing a calm and gentle entry to the school day. This structured, yet relaxed time allows students to settle into the classroom, connect with their teacher and peers, and begin the day feeling regulated and ready for learning. This intentional start supports smooth transitions and sets a positive tone for the day ahead.

"Our son’s first day at St Mary’s was incredibly special. He was so excited to start school, following in the footsteps of his older sisters and cousins.  Having his siblings’ connection to the school gave him confidence from day one.
We love St Mary’s for its strong sense of belonging and its genuinely welcoming community."
